There's a reason couples come here to propose, honeymoon and celebrate. Santorini does romance like nowhere else — the caldera, the sunsets, the quiet whitewashed villages. As a local, I've helped couples plan some of the most important moments of their lives here (including proposals that ended in a "yes"). Here's how to do it right.
Santorini Honeymoon & Proposal Guide
Where to propose, the most romantic sunset cruise, photographers, dinners and where to stay — from a local.
The most romantic places to propose
Pick the spot that matches the moment you want — here are the ones I send couples to:
- The Oia steps — the classic. Whitewashed steps winding down toward the caldera, blue domes all around. Iconic, and unmistakably Santorini.
- Ammoudi Bay — down below Oia, right by the sea with stunning water views. Quieter, more intimate, with the water and cliffs as your backdrop.
- Pyrgos village church — for a traditional, heartfelt, truly Greek feeling. Away from the crowds, full of old-village character. Special if you want something meaningful rather than showy.
- Firostefani village — quiet, with amazing caldera views. All the beauty of Fira's edge without the crush of people — perfect for a calm, private moment.
- On a sunset catamaran cruise — the best atmosphere of all. Out on the water as the sun drops over the caldera, no crowds. Hard to beat for a proposal.
The sunset cruise — the most romantic thing you can book
If you do one thing as a couple, make it a sunset catamaran cruise. You get the swimming and the hot springs in daylight, then the famous sunset from the water — calm, private, and unforgettable. It's the setting couples remember most, and a beautiful place to propose or just celebrate being here together.
Capture the moment: a private photoshoot
Whether it's a proposal, an engagement or your honeymoon, a private photographer is the one thing couples are always glad they booked — real photos of Oia, the caldera or your moment, the kind you'll keep forever. Couples have proposed on a shoot booked through us and walked away with the whole thing captured beautifully.
The most romantic dinners
A honeymoon or proposal deserves a special table. These are the spots I send couples to for a memorable dinner with a view:
- Fanari, Oia — beautiful sunset views over the caldera. One of the loveliest places in Oia to watch the sun go down over dinner.
- Suropo, Imerovigli — amazing views in a quiet village with a wonderful atmosphere. Calmer and more intimate than the Oia crowds — perfect for couples.
- La Coline — amazing views and refined fine dining. The special-occasion choice when you want to make the night count.
Where to stay for a honeymoon
For a honeymoon, base yourselves on the caldera — Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani give you the sunset views and the quiet, romantic atmosphere. We've put together the island's best places to stay, with locations on the map so you can pick the right area.
Best time for a honeymoon in Santorini
September is a local favourite for couples — warm but not scorching, the sea at its warmest, long romantic evenings, and the island lively without the peak-August crush. May, June and early October are lovely too. Whenever you come, book the special things (sunset cruise, dinners, photographer) well ahead — they fill up.
A few local tips for couples
Do Oia in the morning for photos without the crowds. Book a caldera-view dinner ahead (Oia and Imerovigli are magical at sunset). And pre-book your transfer so your arrival is smooth — you don't want to start a romantic trip stuck in a taxi queue.
